Unfortunately, most of the lecturers do not see popular spelling mistakes in academic papers too often. That may also be because the students will eventually become blind to these mistakes. This can sometimes mean that even obvious spelling errors are not noticed because you have read your work too often or have always made a specific spelling mistake during your previous student career.
Correct spelling mistakes
In order to combat popular spelling errors in scientific papers, it is therefore at least advisable to proofread your own work. This means that an expert reviewer will review your work for the following errors and correct them accordingly:
Popular spelling errors in scientific papers can usually only be completely avoided if the four- or six-eyes principle is used. Of course, you should use the spell checker of your word processor. However, the software can not detect any errors, so nothing bothers about the second correction by a competent lecturer.
Popular spelling errors in scientific papers – these errors are common
But what mistakes are made by so many graduates? Popular spelling mistakes in scholarly papers include, for example, the confusion of “that” and “that.” The spelling “that” is no longer correct anyway, but is still used by some older students. Other popular spelling errors in scientific papers include:
- from each other
- on the one hand on the other hand
- the first world war
- to the first, to the second
Other examples, such as “Jahresabschuss” and “Rum and Wealth” also show very clearly that the spell checker does not always start if a word is not spelled correctly. Therefore, it is even more important that there is at least one person who looks so carefully at the spelling correction that even these errors can be corrected. Usually it is better if it is not the author of the work itself (YOU), because just spelling mistakes, which lack only one letter, are unfortunately too often overlooked.
Is the linguistic correction of a scientific paper allowed at all?
Many graduates, however, are very afraid that they might violate the rules of their university with the proofreading of their work. This is fortunately not the case. Because if you inquire directly from the German Higher Education Association, you will know that an editing of your own work is entirely permitted.
What is not allowed, however, is the contentwise implementation of the correction in the scientific work. Why the implementation of a proofreading is not permitted, is obviously obvious. After all, a scientific work is always about the fact that you have to provide your own mental performance and are graded exactly for it.
How much time is needed for the proofreading?
If you would like to commission a proofreading of your scientific work, you should allow sufficient time for this. This means that you should have seven to ten days to complete before you can complete the work with the examiner responsible. Of course, an express proofreading is possible, which is then associated with higher costs. In any case you should inquire in time for the proofreading, so that the authorized person can spare enough time for the examination of the respective work.
